Design Technologist

Bastian Gurtner

I make complex systems legible.

Designer who builds. 10+ years shaping digital platforms, with a stack that goes from Figma to production components in Storybook. I prototype in code to validate product decisions with evidence instead of opinion.

Currently leading UX/UI and design systems at SCOTT Sports.

Validated

A full B2B platform. No engineering budget.

Prototyped a complete B2B platform experience in code — UI flows, theming, a pre-order input grid taken to user-testable state — using AI-assisted development. Validated product decisions without consuming any engineering capacity.

In progress

Moving from handoff to shipping real components.

Moving the design team from handing off specs to authoring design system components directly in Storybook. Currently running tests and putting the review process in place before entering production — targeting the main source of UI inconsistency: the translation layer between design and engineering.

Validated

Built the proof. Changed the roadmap.

Built a DAM/CMS integration proof of concept end to end — content model, code, Contentful and Cloudinary API integration. Benchmarked it against the existing platform and presented the measured results to stakeholders. Publishing time down 60%; the architecture informed the platform roadmap.

How I work

3 principles
Evidence

Research before opinions

I test with the people who actually use the product — dealers, editors, internal teams. Prototypes get validated with controlled experiments and real tasks. Outcomes are measured, then argued with data.

Systems

Design systems as products

Components, tokens and variables in Figma — but also governance, naming, documentation, and the decision rules that keep a system coherent across brands and platforms at scale.

AI-assisted

Code ↔ design, accelerated

I prototype in code with AI-assisted workflows — Claude Code, MCP integrations, Figma-to-code pipelines — shipping working Next.js prototypes instead of static mockups. Ideas become clickable the same day.

About

profile

I started in computer science, trained as a developer before switching to design. That hybrid background is why I'm comfortable where most designers stop — dense data, hard constraints, production code.

Today I lead UX/UI and design systems at SCOTT Sports, moving the team from handing off specs to shipping real components in Storybook. I build working prototypes in Next.js to settle product debates with evidence instead of opinion.

I'm looking for a Design Technologist role where I can contribute across the stack — close to engineering, close to users, close to the system.

Let's build something measurable.

If you're building complex products and need someone who speaks both design and engineering — let's talk.
